GOD UNDERSTANDS NOTHING!
One night, when I was eight years old, I was laying on my back in our front yard looking into the NOTHINGNESS of space and counting stars. It was one of those classic Texas nights: “The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas!” The question came to my mind, “What holds those stars up there?”
All these years later, it remains a mystery tp many people. The ancient Greeks had their complicated theories of what kept the stars in space. Basically, they postulated that the earth was fixed in space, and everything revolved around us (Greek vanity?). Then as the years went by, noted “experts” like Aristotle, Copernicus, Galileo, Descartes, and Newton speculated various inconclusive hypotheses. No one suggested duct tape, but that makes more sense than some of their conjectures.
Most intellectuals now agree that gravity holds the solar system together. In fact, the “world’s smartest man” Stephen Hawking has declared that God did not create the Universe. Hawking believes that GRAVITY created everything and holds it together (Faithworld, 9-2-2010). I disagree, but what is gravity, anyway? Is it a law? Is it a force? Even Einstein could not fully define gravity, and NASA recently developed special programs just to figure out gravity.
But God clearly details everything we need to know about the solar system. In Job 26:7, “God…hangs the world on NOTHING!” That nothing may be at least gravity, or at most faith. No one has seen gravity because it looks like NOTHING. Yet, we all depend upon it and are impacted by it. Without gravity, everything on earth and in the universe would go berserk. It is everywhere and it is nowhere. Gravity holds up the universe but it appears to be NOTHING. Gravity and faith are similar – you cannot see them but you sure know if they are not present.
The writer of Job captured this deep truth: “God…hangs the world on NOTHING.” What is NOTHING? I don’t understand it, but God does. God creates everything out of NOTHING. NOTHING is His Play Doh. Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God created.” Obviously, God started with NOTHING to create something. In the economy of God, NOTHING is the prelude to everything. The fact that God hung the world on NOTHING, made perfect sense to the Apostle Paul. He wrote in 1 Corinthians 1:28 that God takes NOTHING and makes something. And again in Romans 1:20, God makes the seen out of the unseen.
Sound confusing? That’s because God is not limited to time and space like we are. What does that mean for you and me? If you have lost it all and have NOTHING left, your NOTHING is all God needs to make something! If your health or wealth has been reduced to NOTHING, give it to God and He can make something. If NOTHING is left of your friends, career, or dreams, give them to God – He can make something out of NOTHING! Miracles can be created out of NOTHING – be encouraged today. Trust God. Be amazed at what God does.
God hung the world on NOTHING. NOTHING is too hard for God because God understands NOTHING. What can He do for you?
